Peacebuilders Training

“I have never been on a course that has been as relevant, transformative and memorable. It has been an experience that reflects the values, skills and unique experience of the facilitators. Thank you!”
Dr D Bowman, Senior Lecturer, University of London, Conflict Mediation Skills Course participant 2009

Conflict Resolution training is about learning to live and work together in a peaceful and dynamic way, enabling people to work with the flow of conflict rather than pushing against it.

Peacebuilders delivers both introductory training in dealing with conflict, as well as fully accredited mediation training.

Introduction to Dealing with Conflict

This one-day course is invaluable for anyone wanting to improve their communication skills in conflict situations. Communication is essential in any partnership, organisation or group, but too often people misunderstand one another. This course provides a solid understanding in how conflict affects people and how to communicate more effectively.

This course will equip you to:

  • understand how people in conflict think, feel and behave
  • become more aware of your own preferred style of managing conflict
  • know how to work with others’ conflict styles
  • handle personal and workplace conflicts more effectively
  • improve your communication skills in conflict situations

This course can be provided as an in-house training session. Contact us for further details.

Accredited Mediation Training

The training is a six day programme delivered in two parts. The aim is to enable those with busy work schedules to attend, with part one being 3 days long and part two just 2 days long.

This course is currently only available on an in-house basis.

Conflict Mediation Skills- Part 1 (3 days)

This course will equip you to:

  • become more aware of your own preferred ways of managing conflict
  • know how to work with others’ conflict styles
  • handle personal and workplace conflicts more effectively
  • understand the benefits of mediation as a dispute resolution process
  • understand the core principles of mediation and when it can be used
  • understand what the role of a mediator is, and the skills and qualities needed to be an effective mediator
  • know how to deal sensitively with strongly expressed emotions in conflict situations
  • prepare people in conflict for entering a joint-party mediation session
  • practice and develop the foundational skills needed to mediate conflicts

Conflict Mediation Skills- Part 2 (2 days)

Part 1 is a pre-requisite for this course, which will equip you to:

  • practice mediating in a full ‘mock’ mediation session between people in conflict
  • understand what is involved in running a joint-party mediation session between people in conflict
  • understand impartiality and non-discriminatory practice in mediation
  • develop the skills to empower people to resolve their own conflicts
  • understand how to channel emotional energy constructively
  • learn how to handle imbalances of power between people in conflict

Our conflict mediation skills training will equip you to mediate in conflicts between two or three individuals, although many of the skills can also be applied to larger group conflicts.

We teach an integrated approach to conflict mediation that focuses on both the substantive issues involved and on transforming the relationship between those experiencing the conflict. Our training is delivered by practising mediators with significant experience of the processes.

In order to achieve accreditation by the Open College Network (OCN), participants are required to attend both parts of the course and to complete some extra course work to the required standard. Participants that achieve this will be awarded two OCN certificates at level 3 in Conflict Mediation Skills.

“Excellent! It has opened my eyes to how I think things through and act in conflict situations as well as giving me new tools to be able to support others in conflict situations.”
Janet Green, Genesis Sale Moor Community Project, Conflict Mediation Skills participant 2008
